A Resource-Based Perspective on Corporate Environmental Performance and Profitability - Michael Russo and Paul Fouts find that after adjusting returns for almost all factors, companies with better environmental records have higher returns on assets. Their research focused on the independent environmental research of 243 firms and resulted in their conclusion that "it pays to be green".
Corporate Governance and Equity Prices - Paul Gompers, Joy Ishii and Andrew Metrick find that "firms with stronger shareholder rights had a higher firm value, higher profits, higher sales growth, lower capital expenditures, and made fewer corporate acquisitions".
Corporate Social and Financial Performance: A Meta-analysis - This is a meta-analysis of 52 previous studies and 33,878 observations that demonstrates a positive correlation between corporate social and financial performance.
From Socially Responsible Investing to Sustainable Investing
Over the next 15 years, I think we will see a transition from the old world of socially responsible investing (SRI) to the new world of sustainable investing. By sustainable investing, I mean the full integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into financial analysis and decision-making. This transition is critical if our industry is to broaden its market and maximize its impact on corporate behavior, on financial markets, and on global society itself.
